We all know Habitat builds clean, stable and decent housing for low-income families. But, I learned so much more about the organization on today’s show. Tia Anderson, Midcoast Habitat for Humanity’s Executive Director, and I talked about the process of building a Habitat home, the organization’s efforts worldwide (over 300,000 homes built!), and the outstanding efforts taking place in here in our own little corner of the globe. With efforts like “Women Build” (coming this spring) and energy efficient homes underway here in the Midcoast, there are a lot of ways to get involved. Go to, http://www.midcoasthabitat.org for more information. Enjoy!

Music:  This  morning, we heard from the Jackson 5, David Mallet, Shawn Colvin, Martina McBride and James Taylor.

Making Maine – February 18, 2011 – James Strickland, Artist February 24, 2011

Podcast:  www.MakingMaine.Podomatic.com

From the little bit I knew of James before the show, it was clear he’s lived an amazing life in art and design. But the story behind how it has all unfolded made it even more fascinating. His current sculptural work is taking him in the direction of heliocentric sculptures – large scale forms that capture the sun and generate power. The metaphor of art providing not just spiritual and emotional enlightenment, but also physical light was incredibly inspirational for me. Stay tuned until the end – James shares an incredible story of another power of art after the Oklahoma City bombing.

Thanks for coming into the studio, James!

Making Maine – February 11, 2011 – Paul Chartrand – Organic Wine Importer February 11, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — ourmaine @ 10:55 am

Podcast:  www.MakingMaine.Podomatic.com

Paul Chartrand is something of a pioneer in the wine industry. When, he started importing exclusively organic wines to the U.S. in 1985, he was the only one in the U.S. doing so. Fortuitously, this was just as the wine world was starting to see the growth in organic wine production in the horizon. It’s taken a while to have those wines find their deserved acceptance, but they are finding it more and more. We talked about this growth, the health benefits and myths surrounding organic wines, and how organics fit into the wider wine world. Maybe most importantly, we talked about where in the Midcoast you can get imports and domestics from Chartrand Imports! Find out more at www.ChartrandImports.com and enjoy the show!

Thanks to Paul for coming in today and sharing three artists that were new to me…a global treat of wine AND music today:  Teddy Thompson (English), Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh (Irish), William Vivanco (Cuban).
